If you had to pick LA’s most beautiful buildings, which ones would you choose? For me, the Getty Museum would be high on the list. The site’s exhilarating blend of location and architecture has been called “the closest thing LA has to utopia” — and that’s before you even get to the art. (It’s also been called the world’s best free museum.) If you haven’t experienced The Getty yet, here’s what you’re missing. If you have, you don’t need me to tell you.

The Getty Center: The roof of LA

It seems fitting that you approach the Getty Center from deep underground, on a tram that lifts you into the heavens with misty glimpses of the city below. When it stops, the doors open to a vast world of sheer sunlight, breezy air and endless sky. Over its edges in every direction, Los Angeles sweeps out to infinity. On a clear day you can see the LA skyline, the San Bernardino and San Gabriel Mountains, and the Pacific.
The unique quality of the light surrounding you is created by 1.2 million square feet of Travertine marble, cleft-cut and rough-textured to absorb and reflect the sun in sublime ways. Look closer and you’ll catch the whispery shapes of fossilized leaves, feathers, and branches, encased for millennia in the stone. Many think this material is the single most inspired aspect of architect Richard Meier’s masterpiece. more »

Even if you’ve explored this yuletide wonderland before, this year’s edition promises to deliver new delights. The holiday light area will be bigger, better and even brighter, with all-new animal themed LED lights, lasers, 3D projections, and a dazzling musical water and light display. (Not to mention hot cocoa, real reindeer and Santa Claus.) It all turns on starting next Friday at the LA Zoo. more »

The Pasadena Museum of California Art just opened two gorgeous new exhibitions. One is the first ever dedicated to the decorative tiles, vessels, and sculptures of Berkeley’s California Faience (including tiles from Hearst’s San Simeon). The other is a retrospective of California Arts & Crafts era printmaker and painter William S. Rice, some of them exhibited for the first time. more »

You’re not legally obligated to serve it on Thanksgiving, you know. KCET’s The Public Kitchen has suggested ten mouthwatering alternatives that could have you benching your baster for quite a while. Pork Rib Roast with Port Wine/Cherry Sauce? Butternut Squash Galette? We’ll pass on the drumstick, please. more »

Teams of agents from all John Aaroe Group offices spent a weekend picking avocados, grapefruits and oranges that would otherwise have gone to waste for the grassroots volunteer group Food Forward. more »
