Legendary winemaker Béatrice Cointreau selling noted Malibu vineyard

After devoting her 20th-generation Old World winemaking expertise to making Malibu’s Admirable Family Vineyards a renowned success, legendary winemaker Béatrice Cointreau is selling the property to return to Europe and focus on her just-launched French Champagne.

Cointreau, whose great-grandfather founded Cointreau Distillery and whose grandfather founded Rémy Martin, is ready to pass the Admirable legacy on to a new steward. The property, L’Admirable Malibu, is represented by Shauna Walters, Meredith Schlosser and Sally Forster Jones at John Aaroe Group.

Admirable wines have been honored for their outstanding quality at international wine competitions in Europe and the US. The Malibu Coast was declared an American Viticultural Area (AVA) in August 2014, generating waves of interest by wine media and recognition by professionals over the world.

The first woman member of the Wine Academy of France and former CEO of Champagne Gosset in France, Cointreau invested in the then-defunct coastal vineyard in 2013 after writing the book Organic Wines: a Marketer’s Guide. Her French winemaking sensibilities immediately recognized the potential of the site, whose climate she felt was reminiscent of Provence.

The Malibu estate on Kanan Dume Road, between Zuma Beach and Carbon Beach, overlooks Point Dume, with an unobstructed view of the ocean. It consists of two lots totaling nearly five acres, planted with over 3,000 vines of Viognier, Cabernet, Cabernet hard graft on Syrah and Viognier on Chardonnay. The second lot is also permitted for a greenhouse.

The estate’s charming Mediterranean-inspired residence is close to shops, restaurants and beaches, yet hidden from the road. This privately gated hosting paradise, fronted by a circular motor court surrounded by centennial vines, encompasses 6,635 square feet of open plan living space with five bedrooms and six baths. Every inch is rich with traditional craftsmanship and artisan details. Special amenities include an elevator, a safe room, indoor/outdoor sound and full alarm system with a dozen cameras monitoring the estate. A gorgeous cellar with a gathering room does double duty as a media room and tasting room.
